About this blog

What do book lovers enjoy almost as much as reading a book? Talking about it, of course! A group of us here at the Daily Record/Sunday News has decided to take our book talk beyond the newsroom.
We'll share what we like, and what we don't, about the books we are reading. This will also be the place to find out about local authors, new releases, upcoming book signings and what's going on at the York County libraries.
Interested in "The NewsVroom: A Year at the York County Libraries"? Click on the "NewsVroom visits" tab under "Local libraries" on the toolbar at the top of the page.
And, of course, we want to hear from you too. Email your book review to schain@ydr.com and we will post it on Book Buzz.

Rachel Caine’s “Working Stiff” is scary good
The season is right for a spooky yet satisfying read. Try the first book in the new “Revivalist series,” “Working Stiff” by science fiction author Rachel Caine (she also wrote the fabulous “Weather Warden” series and the equally fun spinoff … Continue reading
“Shadowfever” isn’t a fitting end for epic Fever series
MacKayla Lane is a charming 23-year-old Southern girl who prefers to spend her days lounging by her family’s pool and bartending by night. She’s kind of like Sookie Stackhouse… except on Prozac. It’s Mac’s older sister, ambitious Alina, who is … Continue reading
“Picture the Dead” is haunting
“Picture the Dead” by Adele Griffin and Lisa Brown is a compelling story of love, loss and the Civil War… Oh yeah, there’s also some spooky ghosts. The main character of this book, Jennie Lovell, has lost quite a bit. … Continue reading
Don’t make a deal with Lisa Desrochers’ “Personal Demons”
High school and hell have a lot in common. Well, that’s the promising premise behind “Personal Demons” by Lisa Desrochers anyway. Main character Frannie Cavanaugh is a self-centered, obnoxious teen with a special, secret talent. GASP. What could it be? … Continue reading
“Mind Games” by Carolyn Crane will hook you instantly
What if you could take your fears, your anxieties, your anger and depression and give it to another person so you wouldn’t have to feel them? What if that person you gave your disabilities to was a criminal and having … Continue reading
Searching for a trashy beach read? Looking no further than V.C. Andrews’ classic “Flowers in the Attic”
While looking for a book to read while lounging at the pool last weekend, I came across a torn and used copy of V.C. Andrews’ novel “Flowers in the Attic” at the York Emporium. I had read the book (and … Continue reading
Still wondering about L.J. Smith’s “Nightworld” series’s “Strange Fate”
When popular young adult fiction author L.J. Smith published her first supernatural romance series, “The Vampire Diaries“, I was about 5 years old. Of course I wasn’t really that into vampires at the time, unless you count Count Von Count … Continue reading
“Shiver” by Maggie Stiefvater is no “Twilight”
As a team Jacob fan, I was immediately interested in the young adult book “Shiver” by Maggie Stiefvater the minute I read the summary on the jacket. I was excited by the prospect of a fantasy novel that had a … Continue reading
Review of “Homecoming” (Mercy Thompson Graphic Novel Series #1) by Patricia Briggs, Francis Tsai and Amelia Woo
I’m not the biggest graphic novel fan out there. I’ve read the “Watchmen”, and yes, the “Crow” but I’ve never been more impressed with a graphic novel than I was with the prequel to Patricia Briggs’ New York Times best … Continue reading
What to read after Twilight and Sookie?
The Twilight series is over. We won’t hear from our favorite telepathic barmaid Sookie Stackhouse until next year. What’s a vampire fan to do? I’ve compiled a top ten book list of urban fantasies featuring our favorite blood drinking creatures … Continue reading
