Specials at Book Nook

The Book Nook will be open for a special sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Red Lion Street Fair special is: bags of selected books for $1, 4 eight-track tapes for $1 and cassettes are buy one and get one free.

The Book Nook, located at the rear of the former Red Lion Country Club on Country Club Road, is operated by the Friends of Kaltreider-Benfer Library. All proceeds benefit the library.

Operation Paperback fundraiser

Operation Paperback will hold its annual fundraiser during Manchester Township's Summer Fun Festival.

The used book sale is from 3 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at Cousler Park at Church and Greenbriar roads. There also will be silent auction items and sponsorship boxes.

Funds are used for postage and packaging to send books to U.S. military personnel throughout the world.

Big book sale in Lancaster

The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will celebrate its 27th Annual Book Sale with great bargains on some 75,000 used books.

The sale will be held Aug. 13-16 at 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. at 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster,

Home-cooked food will also be available. All proceeds support the historical society.

While you're there, stop in the museum to see "Decorated and Plain: A Mennonite and Amish Sampler," a display of Pennsylvania German arts in handcrafted furniture, fraktur, needlework and other artifacts.

Last year, I sort of stumbled into the sale, not knowing how it worked or what to expect. I left with a bag full of books.

'The Host' comes out tomorrow!

A novel about space invaders and body snatchers isn't typically my cup of tea. But then again, neither is a love story between a 100-year-old vampire and his teenage would-be prey.

And I'm currently reading that book for (I'm a little ashamed here) the third time. I'm talking, of course, about "Twilight," the young adult series that has made stay-at-home mom Stephenie Meyer a best-selling author.

Wonderful photos, beautiful (and funny) memories

It’s rare that I take great pleasure in proofreading pages. But the other day I was asked to tackle our newest publication, “All In One Room: York County’s Schoolhouses.”

I have always loved looking at old photos — even when I didn’t know a soul in them. But “All In One Room” proved to be a gold mine of memories for me, someone too young to have attended one.
