So many new ways to connect with readers

Here’s my column that appears in the York Sunday News today.
When I go to a party and meet someone new, the conversation eventually turns to our jobs.
I tell them about being a newspaper editor and the various social networking accounts my staff maintains and the magazines we produce and the blogs we write and the e-newsletters we send and the websites we oversee and the forums we participate in and the mobile apps we help develop and on and on.
They tilt their heads slightly and scrunch their eyes. I can tell they’re confused. The newspaper, after all, is a print product, the traditional way companies have conveyed news and information. And a lot of what I tell them we do involves new and emerging technology with no print piece. The conversation usually goes something like this.
Person: But I thought you said you work for a newspaper.
Me: I did.
Person: But what does tweeting and posting and blogging and all of that other stuff have to do with the newspaper?
Me: A lot. Here, let me explain.
This is where I tell them that we are no longer only a daily newspaper, we are a media company, and printing a newspaper is just one of the many things we do. We also publish a home magazine, a women’s magazine, an entertainment guide and four weeklies tailored to specific areas of the county. We operate Twitter and Facebook accounts, maintain blogs, develop smart phone apps, produce videos, oversee various websites, and the list goes on.
Whenever I have this conversation, the person is surprised, not only by the wealth of technology we use to do our jobs but also by the variety of platforms through which we deliver the news and information we gather.
You want to get your news on your smartphone? No problem, just download our free YDR mobile app.
Want to “talk” with others about food-related topics? I know just the place that will provide the robust community you seek — our Letseatpa Facebook page.
Missed Friday night’s championship game and the big play everyone’s talking about? Log onto GameTimePa.com and watch the video.
It’s our job as a media company to deliver the content you want in whatever way you want to receive it. For some, that’s the traditional newspaper, which remains an essential part of what we do. For others, it’s the mobile app or the website or a combination thereof. And, for still others, it might be a Facebook page or Twitter feed or blog.
Part of my job as social media coordinator is to make you and others aware of our offerings so that you keep informed and able to make the best choices for your lifestyle.
If you’re always on the go and want the latest local news and prep sports scores at your fingertips, it’s clear that our mobile apps are for you. If you want to interact with others who have similar interests, our Facebook pages will meet your needs. And, yes, if you want to relax on the easy chair next to the flickering fire and read your newspaper, that works for us.
The newspaper industry has changed significantly since I started in this business. Technology has allowed us to connect with people in ways I never would have dreamed possible. It’s exciting to be part of this evolution and to be part of finding new and better ways to serve our readers.
