An under-utilized treasure!

How many York Countians truly realize what a treasure we have here in this county in the York County Heritage Trust? Even many history buffs (and I suspect some of this blog's regular readers) have not spent much time exploring the array of interesting collections YCHT has on hand. From a diverse assortment of various museums (all of which can be enjoyed for one modest sum!) to an excellent library and archives, YCHT is well worth paying a visit (or several!).

From a Civil War perspective, there are many things of interest. The main East Market Street location has both the library and historical museum. Among the latter's displays are a number of rare Civil War artifacts, including material once owned by Major General William B. Franklin, a York native who commanded a signficant portion of the Army of the Potomac at Fredericksburg. The library contains all kinds of files on various aspects of the county during the Civil War, including newspaper clippings, first hand accounts, letters, etc. The library also has a nice collection of Civil War books for the researcher, including regimental histories, battle studies, and county histories with large Civil War sections (Gibson and Prowell's books, for example). There are resources to help you trace your ancestors as well.
