Geary, of course, is Civil War general John W. Geary, most known for his divisional command in the XII Corps (his "White Star Division" was on Culp's Hill at Gettysburg. When this article was written in 1866, the Republican was running for governor of Pennsylvania to replace the outgoing incumbent, Andrew Curtin.

Clymer Hiester, mentioned in the article, was a white supremist who was running against Geary in the fall election. He accused Geary of having a platform that promoted African-American suffrage, and ran some very nasty racially sensitive advertisements.

Geary won the election.
