Clinton's people

At about 1:30 p.m., I stopped by the local Hillary Clinton campaign office on S. George Street.

I could see about a dozen volunteers, all women. Several sat at a table in a back room, phone receivers glued to their ears. I assumed they were doing some last-minute phone canvassing.

Another group of about five or six volunteers was preparing to do some door-to-door canvassing.

Among them was Nancy Stump of Etters. She said she'd been canvassing door-to-door for the last three weekends.

She made some phone calls for the Kerry campaign back in 2004, but this year is the first time she's gone around knocking on doors. She found that she likes it. It's kind of fun, going around and discussing issues with people. And when she runs into another Clinton supporter, she likes the sense of camaraderie.

Should Obama win the primary, Stump said she would still support him and work on his campaign. But she's convinced Clinton is the better candidate.

"I think she's very strong," Stump said. "I think she can best McCain. She's a leader. She's what America needs."

Spirits seemed high among the volunteers in the Clinton headquarters. Statewide, they knew their opponent was ahead in the polls.

Stump said she'd gone in for half a day at work. Several of her co-workers, former Obama supporters whom she'd managed to convert, told her they voted for Clinton.

"I'm pumped," Stump said.
