The Obama video

OK, I am way overdue on these updates. As you may have gathered from my last (rather pathetic) entry, it's a hectic time for me.

In a moment, I'm going to give an account of the campaign appearances I covered this week -- two by Barack Obama, and one by Hillary Clinton.

But first, I'd like to mention something about the preceding video of Barack Obama's Town Hall Meeting in Harrisburg Sunday night.

Staff photographer Paul Kuehnel accompanied me to the events on Monday. You can see his videos, which are far more polished than mine, on the video section of this Website.

But I went by myself to the Obama Town Hall Meeting on Sunday night, and took my own footage there. I finally got a chance to edit it Thursday.

When I was done, I uploaded it to YouTube. Since it takes a little while for the upload to go through and I had a lot to do, I ran out to the supermarket while it was uploading.

When I got back, I found that it had uploaded successfully, and that somebody had already posted a video response. It was a clip from Sean Hannity, criticizing Obama.

Within 15 minutes, somebody else -- apparently an Obama supporter -- posted a text response praising it.

The fast turnaround amazed me. I don't know whether it was sheer chance, or whether both the pro- and anti-Obama camps have people constantly monitoring YouTube, waiting for a new video devoted to the Illinois senator to pop up so they can pounce.

Before I even posted it on my blog, it already had 65 views. Somebody has given it a one-star rating, which is the lowest possible. I don't know whether that reflects the viewer's opinion of Obama, or my admittedly sub-amateur filmmaking technique.

It's apparently prompted someone else to "subscribe" to my videos, meaning this particular user will get a notification every time I post a new one. This user seems to be anti-Hillary Clinton (the fact that the words "Hillary Blows" serve as his/her channel icon is kind of a giveaway). I can't tell if he/she is pro-Obama or not.

I'm flattered that this user wants to subscribe to my videos, though I wonder if I should warn him/her that not all of my videos are erudite political commentary. In fact, some of my friends from New Jersey are heading up next weekend for one of our typically rambunctious poker sessions, and the possibility of someone mooning the camera is not exactly remote.

I would like to say two things for the record:

1) I'm pleased that some of the viewers liked the video. But I didn't intend it to promote Obama's campaign, so much as to give our readers a look at what went on during the rally. As I've mentioned on a number of occasions, I won't endorse any candidate, party or position on this blog, because that would compromise me professionally.

I've already made a similar video for a Hillary Clinton rally, and I would do so for any presidential candidate whose regional appearance I end up covering -- including John McCain, Ron Paul or Ralph Nader.

2) If you're really interested in my videos, I suggest that you take another look at "The Wooden Spoon Prank," which is included on this blog's archives, March 12, under the entry "Very important video." I'm telling you, it's this generation's "Citizen Kane"!
