Cindy McCain

I was out for a couple of days. When I came in to work an evening shift, I was surprised to check my e-mail and learn that Cindy McCain was coming to York County campaign headquarters today.

Not only that, but the e-mail asked members of the press to get there at 4 for a security sweep. I checked my watch and saw that I had ... 10 minutes to get there!

I arrived by 4. It turned out to be academic, anyway. As I've mentioned in this blog before, campaign events simply do not start on time. Sure enought, she didn't get there until 6.

The reason I hadn;t heard more about it, apparently, was because it wasn't originally supposed to be a press event. She was going to show up at a rally in Gettysburh, then just swing by York County for a meet-and-greet with local volunteers before continuing on east for a rally in Philadelphia tomorrow morning.

Nothing particularly dramatic happened.

She showed up with former Gov. Tom Ridge. They walked around headquarters, saying hi to volunteers and thanking them for their help. A bunch of people got their pictures taken with them. Then they reboarded the bus and rolled out.

Like I said, it was no big deal. Maybe I'm just getting jaded in my old age.

But some of the campaign volunteers seemed to get a real kick out of it. These people put in hours of their time making calls to potential voters. Take it from a guy who spends a lot of time on the phone trying to persuade people to talk to him -- that can be a real grind.

So it's nice that the national campaign takes some time to personally thank the rank-and-file volunteers like that.
