Early election night

| | Comments (0)

It's a little after nine right now. The polls are closed. Just waiting for the results to come in.

Like most of my colleagues, I spent some time earlier out at the polling places to talk to voters.

I spent most of my time hanging out at theYMCA off Newberry Street in York. It turned out to be a pretty active spot.

When I showed up at 7, about a dozen people were lined up to vote. Marilyn Hake, a volunteer with the county Democratic Party, was handing out stickers outside.

Hake said that before the county dropped off a third polling machine about an hour earlier, the line was spilling out the door, down the front steps and onto the sidewalk. And that was despite the light rain.

Hake said she's been volunteering at polls for more than a decade and never saw the kind of turnout and enthusiasm she saw on Tuesday.

Every person I spoke to said he or she was there to vote for Obama. That's not surprising, since York is solidly Democratic territory -- the only York County municipality where Dems rule the roost.

Elsewhere in the county, plenty of McCain supporters were showing up at the polls, to judge by the anecdotes that my colleagues are bringing back to the office.

Other than that, frankly, I don't have much else to write yet. Until more results come in, I can't really give my analysis of them.

Soon, I'll be heading out to the respective Republican and Democratic post-election get-togethers, where glasses will be raised either in consolation or celebration -- or a little of both -- depending on how the results turn out.

I'll keep you posted.

As a side note, I'm wondering what the hell I'm going to do with myself once this race is over. I've got a feeling I'm not the only one in America pondering that particular question.
