OK, I've gotta bang out this story really quick for the news desk, so I don't have a lot of time to dwell on this right now.
But here's the deal. Tom Wolf IS NOT running for governor.
Wolf, for those of you just joining us, is a really prominent York County resident. For years, he was co-owner of the Wolf Organization. And he was on the board of just about every non-profit within York County's borders.
In Feb. of 2007, he accepted an offer by Gov. Ed Rendell to be state secretary of revenue. And he appeared to be on track as the Democratic candidate for governor next year.
But he told me in a phone interview this afternoon that he met with some officials from the Wolf Organization a couple of weeks ago. They said that they've been going through some rough times with the economy in the shape it's in, and asked if he could take over again to help them out.
He gave it a lot of thought, and decided his first loyalty was to the people who workfor the Wolf Organization.
I felt kind of bad for him. When I was talking to him, he sounded genuinely bummed out about the decision. But a lot of Democratic leaders I've been talking to have mixed feelings.
On the one hand, they were excited about the possibility of him being governor. On the other, they hope that he can get involved again with some of the nonprofit work that he was obliged to give up when he accepted his cabinet post.
Anyway, I should be writing about this more in the near future. I guess I better get working on my story for tomorrow's paper now.
