Vacation's over. Crap.
Anyway, last week saw some promising developments with the state budget. Three of the four caucuses in the legislature have agreed on a tentative $28 billion spending plan.
The ones still against it are Republican leaders in the House, and Gov. Ed Rendell. Republicans are a minority in the House. But Rendell is threatening to veto it, which is a considerably more significant threat to the thing's survival.
Rendell is supposed to meet with caucus leaders tonight. Maybe they'll work out a compromise they can all live with.
I spoke tonight to state Rep. Eugene DePasquale, the only Democrat in the York County delegation, and Republican state representatives Seth Grove and Keith Gillespie. They said the budget plan is a just handshake agreement at this point.
Still, all three of them described it as a significant step forward from where they were just a couple of weeks ago.
Where York County is concerned, there's no time to spare. County officials have said that they'll have to borrow money if a state budget doesn't come through soon.
In fact, they set Tuesday as the deadline for deciding on whether or not to take that step. It's a thorny dilemma. Do they borrow money and take on the resultant financing costs, even though the state budget could be passed any day now? Or do they refrain from taking that step, and risk disaster if the state budget doesn't pass by the end of the year.
If we're lucky, they won't have to make that decision. Keep your fingers crossed.

Yeah the state budget is getting wrapped up, but what about the York City School Board corruption ring? Some, Any open your eyes, look at what is going on!!!
That's not really my bailiwick. I usually deal with politics at the county, state or federal level. Maybe I could use a more specific name for this blog.
