Dems and Republicans: October 2008 Archives

Avillo and Emenheiser

| | Comments (0)

I'm a bit swamped right now.

I've got a big project due this week. (Hint: It's gonna run Sunday. Keep an eye out for it!) In addition to that, I'm still chipping away at those local election stories.

Fortunately, I've got a couple of news releases from Democratic congressional candidate Phil Avillo, and Republican state House of Representatives candidate Lon Emenheiser.

Enjoy.

This week

OK, I ended up hanging out at the office way later than I intended to, so I'll keep this relatively brief.

On Tuesday, I went to the York County Republican Victory Dinner at the Holiday Inn in West Manchester. (I was away on Saturday, so I missed the Democrats' dinner that night.)

Their guest speaker was Joe McCain, John McCain's younger brother. I spoke to him beforehand, and found him very intelligent and personable.

Not to disparage the efforts of dinner organizers, but Joe McCain was a bit of a B-lister as far as speakers go. I suspect the national party is sending the big speakers -- the Joe Liebermans -- to the places where a Republican victory is in doubt.

The V.P. debate

I'm heading out to visit my parents today, and I've got a bunch of errands to run beforehand.

That's precisely why I'm forcing myself to write my take on last night's vice presidential debate now. My editors have suggested that I write a bit shorter for this blog. And I found the whole thing so dang interesting that I could write an entry the length of a Thomas Pynchon novel here if I'm not careful.

I can't help it. I find the whole presentation aspect of politics fascinating. I sometimes think of national politicians as a highly elite cadre of performance artists, who must present themselves as simultaneously tough, competent and likeable while conveying material that most people know they should find interesting but really don't, such as Social Security plans.

And I actually mean that in an admiring way.
