A weird job

| | Comments (0)

I figured that from time to time, I'd just throw some random thoughts in here that don't relate to anything in particular. It is a blog, afterall. Seems kind of obligatory.

But have you ever thought about what a weird job being a politician is? I'd be hard-pressed to think of any other job where applicants make the case for their ability to do it by claiming not to do it.

Admission of bias

If you're a reporter, especially if you write about politics, people will accuse you of bias. That's just a fact of life. Liberals will say you have a conservative bias, and vice versa.

The best you can hope for is getting the two sides to accuse you of bias in equal measure. I'm proud to say, that seems to be the case with me. I've even registered to vote as an independent, so neither side can accuse me of backing the other's agenda.

Since it will probably become evident sooner or later, however, I may as well admit to one bias. I've always been a sucker for underdog campaigns.

Interesting times

My editors have asked me to get a move on in starting this blog. I told them I had been busy with other assignments. (I was actually holed up in a Motel 6 with a bottle of Thunderbird. Just kidding.)

I can't really blame them for getting impatient. It's not like I have any shortage of material to work with here. The deadline just passed for candidates to file their nominating petitions for state and federal races. And that's when things really get cooking.

Getting started

Welcome to my blog. Thanks for reading.
My name is Tom Joyce, and I'm a reporter here at the York Daily Record/Sunday News. My understanding is that I'm supposed to provide some insights into the political scene here in York County.
I might as well start off on an honest note here. I'm not 100 percent sure where I'm going with this. If I manage to pull this off the way I'm hoping, I should be able to give you all some behind-the-scenes insights on what goes on in the political realm around York County, from the perspective of someone who covers it. Maybe it will help you understand the process better.
And if I screw it up -- hey, at least it will probably be amusing in that Ed-Wood-film, watching-a-train-wreck kind of way. Either way, you win.
