Thank your school board members this month

January is School Director Recognition Month, according to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.
The group suggests several ways to celebrate the month and thank board members for volunteering their time, such as:

  • Have a florist donate a rose for each board member and leave them at the member’s place at a board meeting
  • Have students write thank-you notes
  • Create a bulletin board display featuring information and photos of board members

I was at two board meetings this week – Central York and York City. In both cases, the administration took a moment to thank the school board members for their work.

I find it hard to thank these people for their time, unless I can also thank them for allowing academics to suffer in order for athletics to thrive. Athletics have taken priority in the area, and test scores are suffering because of it. Instead of spending construction surplus money on new astroturf, why not throw that money into getting the kids a good education?
Should I also thank these board members for voting to raise my taxes?

    I’ll pass.
