County truancy prevention initiative launches website

The York County Truancy Prevention Initiative recently launched its new website and blog.

You can find it here.

It has information for students, parents and others. There’s also an extensive F.A.Q section that covers everything from “what is truancy?” to what is an excused absence from school.

The blog bills itself as a place to celebrate the “wonderful things” happening in York County school districts.

The initiative is behind a new youth truancy court that should be getting under way now. Training started in September, and I believe the first youth court session should be held in November.

As a reminder, it’s specifically for freshmen at William Penn Senior High in York, but officials hope it will eventually expand to other schools. Older students will be serving as the members of the court and they’ll deal out alternative consequences to truant freshmen. The idea is to save some parents and students from ending up in court with fines. Parents and students have to agree to participate in the youth court.

I’ll update on that initiative as it moves forward.
