Washington Twp. group’s petition to move from Dover schools heads to state

A judge has determined a petition from the Washington Township Education Coalition to try to move the township to a different school district is sufficient to be referred to the state education department, according to court records.

The coalition wants the township to be declared an independent district in order to leave the Dover Area School District and join the Northern York County School District. The York County Court of Common Pleas was tasked with determining if the petition met requirements of state law.

The parties agreed the coalition had collected enough signatures, court documents state. Judge Stephen Linebaugh determined the petition had met other requirements, including providing a sufficient description of the township and providing notice to Northern York County School District, the documents state.

The petition will now be sent to the state education department.
