Shannon Mayo was convicted of third-degree murder Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, in York County court. Here are some selected quotes from the trial.
“Shannon Mayo was the victim, the victim of an unarmed man, mind you.” — Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jennifer Russell, in her opening statement, informing the jury police did not find a gun on Donnell McIntyre after he was shot to death by Shannon Mayo on Oct. 6, 2009.
“You probably don’t know anything about that, which is a good thing.” — Defense attorney Dawn Cutaia, explaining in her opening statement that Mayo was driving around the city looking for drugs when he first encountered McIntyre.
“I had my gun on me, in my pants. But with a gun to the back of my neck? —- that.” — Mayo, in his recorded statement.
“All the shooting and killing they have in this town? We thought we were going to be victims.” — Carmen Barnes, Mayo’s cousin who was with him when they said they were robbed by McIntyre.
“He called later and said he was going to try to get the money, even if he had to rob all the people in York.” — Steven Lane Jr., testifying about a phone call from McIntyre, his roommate, after he kicked him out of the house for not paying his rent.
“I bought it because it was nice and shiny. It’s pretty. Who doesn’t like shiny —-?” — Mayo, explaining why he bought his .40-caliber handgun.
“Cuz, he’s waving.” — Mayo, recalling what Barnes said to him as they began to drive off without McIntyre.
“Carmen, he’s ready to ——- shoot.” — Mayo, recalling what he said to Barnes.
“Carmen was saying, ‘What are you going to do? What are you going to do?’ I said, ‘I don’t know what the —- I’m going to do, Carmen. Just shut the —- up.’” — Mayo telling what happened at a Spring Garden convenience store after they ditched McIntyre.
“I looked across (her) shoulder. I was like, ‘That’s him. That’s the man who robbed me.’” — Mayo.
“You’re making it sound like we’re —— friends. We’re not —— friends. You need to knock it off. He was robbing us. He had a gun to the back of my neck.” — Mayo to Russell during cross-examination.
“Take a breath, Mr. Mayo.” — Russell
“You take a breath.” — Mayo.
“Shannon is Shannon. He didn’t try to hide who he is. I told him not to curse. Obviously, that didn’t work.” — Cutaia, in her closing argument.
“It’s unreasonable to assume everybody with their hands in pockets is holding a gun.” — Russell, in her closing argument.
