From Portland, With Love

Hello all! I just returned from a short trip to the West Coast, to Portland, Oregon to be exact. The food was delicious; the city was quirky. We even drove out to the Coast so we could stick our feet in the chilly Pacific Ocean. This is what most of our breakfasts looked like.

Our hotel was adjacent to a Stumptown Coffee Roasters so we were blessed with breakfasts of lattes and pastries. My favorite!

When in Portland, you have to go to Voodoo Doughnuts. This is not your average doughnut shop. It's eccentric, just like the city it calls home. This place has carved out a niche here, so much so that some people choose to get married at Voodoo Doughnuts. Don't believe me? Check out their website and look at their wedding packages.

Aside from all that, their doughnuts are really quite good. The variety is unsurpassed. You can find the official doughnut of Portland here, the Portland Crème. It's pretty much the same as a Boston Crème, but with two icing eyes. There's the Arnold Palmer, a cake doughnut covered in lemon and tea powder. There's the Dirt doughnut, a doughnut covered with vanilla glaze and Oreo cookies.

We paid a little visit to this Portland hot spot to expand our taste buds the Voodoo Doughnut way. I got one of their classics, the Voodoo Doll. This iced doll-shaped doughnut is jelly filled and comes with its own pretzel stick for stabbing. It is a voodoo doll after all.

Zach opted for the Memphis Mafia. This baby was really the size of my face and it's covered with all of Elvis' favorite treats--chocolate chips, banana and peanut butter.

It was a memorable trip to say the least and I would do it again even with the jet lag. If anything, I'd go back for another Voodoo Doughnut. If you should ever make it out west to the Rose City, you won't be disappointed with the food. Lots of fresh seafood, lots of microbreweries, and an emerging wine industry. It comes highly recommended from yours truly.
