Argentina, here we come!
Two months after we first started talking about taking a mid-winter trip, my college friend Laura and I have decided to head south instead.
It's not that we both don't want to visit Italy (see previous entry here). It's just that we're worried it might be a bit chilly, a bit expensive (what with the Euro kicking the dollar's you-know-what in exchange rates) and a bit, well, typical.
We've both spent time in other parts of Europe and would like to expand our horizons.
For Laura, it will add a fourth continent to her list (she's been to Europe and Australia as well). I've lived and traveled in South America, but only in Venezuela and Ecuador.
We considered Morocco as well, but they're big smokers there, neither of us speak Arabic, and we'd like a little more time to plan for pushing our comfort zone that much. Plus, parts of the country are mountainous and can be pretty cold in February.
In Argentina, it will be summer. They dance tango. I speak the language and understand the culture. They serve awesome steaks and -- because of the recent economic collapse -- food and lodging will be rather inexpensive.
Because of its proximity to Uruguay and Brazil, we might even be able to add another country to our repertoire.
Anyone been there? Have any suggestions of where to go, what to do and see? For me, planning for a trip is half the fun!
