Goggle, not Google

Entrance.jpgToday, a photographer and I tagged along with some York folks who went to Reading to check out the GoggleWorks center for the arts in that city's downtown.

We planned to spend a few hours. We stayed for nearly twice that. There was just so much to see and do.

It's a former safety glass factory that's now a hub for the city's artistic energy. Since GoggleWorks opened nearly three years ago, other attractions have sprouted in an area of town that was more known for drug deals and prostitution than arts and culture.
Smokestack.jpgIt's an example of urban renewal that is working and how arts can drive economics. I talked to lots of folks today about how they made it work in Reading and whether something similar would be possible in York.

Find out what they had to say, and why you should consider a trip to Reading's GoggleWorks this summer -- I'm putting together a story for an upcoming Sunday paper.

Anyone else been there? What did you think?

The photo above shows beer coasters on a wall that is part of an exhibit titled: Design, Drink and Be Merry: The Craft Brew Art Movement, which celebrates the most outstanding designs of American microbreweries. Check it out through June 28.
