I scream, you scream...

sundae.jpgIn case you didn't know, we're in the midst of national ice cream month. If you know anything about me, you know it would be a crime for me to let the celebration pass without mention.

Anyway, I saw this list of the top 10 best places in the world to enjoy the frozen treat, according to

luxury travel company Tauck World Discovery. The only ones I've heard of (besides Ben & Jerry's) are Hot Licks in Fairbanks (I used to know someone who lives in Alaska who talked about it) and Freddo (because I was in Buenos Aires in February.)

1. COWS (Prince Edward Island, Canada)
2. Gelateria Perche No! (Florence, Italy)
3. Tip Top Ice Cream (throughout New Zealand)
4. Kula Lodge & Restaurant (Maui, Hawaii)
5. Freddo (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
6. Gelateria di Piazza (San Gimignano, Italy)
7. Hot Licks Homemade Ice Cream (Fairbanks, Alaska)
8. Glacier Berthillon (Paris)
9. Las Iguanas (Boca de Arenal, Costa Rica)
10. Ben & Jerry's (Waterbury, Vt.)

Which local ice-cream spots would make your top 10 list? What are your top five favorite flavors?

Here are my tops:
Favorite places
1. Dairy Queen
2. Rakestraws in Mecahnicsburg
3. Eckel's drug store/soda fountain in Mechanicsburg
4. The Creamery, State College

My favorite flavors:
1. Mint chocolate chip
2. Chocolate toffee chip/Mocha chip, some variation
3. Butter pecan

Ha! I had an ice cream post this week too - with MY local favorites - check it out

(You're SO right about Rakestraw's)

Like Joan, you missed Handel's on S. Queen St. It's too far for me to drive just for ice cream now that gas is so high, but it's almost always a must stop after being at Apple Hill before getting back on 83 to drive home. It's homemade, more flavors than one can sample in six months, and they, unlike many ice cream shops that do, do not "shave" off the exta ice cream on the sides. Definitely your money's worth of excellent ice cream.

Don't forget that frozen treat from any roadside stand near Baltimore...the "snowball" I like mine with marshmallow topping (right before I go into sugar shock)
