I was in Philadelphia Thursday evening for the city's Fiesta on the Parkway, featuring one of my favorite (albeit old) salsa groups, DLG (Dark Latin Groove), when I saw this banner.
After a few minutes trying to figure out what "jonron" meant, then wondering why I didn't know this word, it dawned on me....
...it's Spanglish for "homerun."
I'm not a huge fan of Spanglish (even though I lapse into it sometimes myself), but I think it's interesting to see how Spanish speakers come up with Spanish versions of English words either when there is no accurate translation or when it's just easier.
For instance:
"lunchar" -- to eat lunch -- instead of the Spanish words "almorzar" or "merender"
"parquear" -- to park -- instead of the Spanish "estacionar"
What do you think of this phenomenon? Do you have any other words that should be included in a Spanglish dictionary, should there ever be such a thing?
