Vacation on a budget

I was looking through some posts on our online forum, The Exchange and came across this plea for help with summer vacation plans.

Who has an idea for him? Post a comment here or add to the thread on The Exchange.

In Washington DC there are a multitude of kid-friendly FREE activities every single day; the smithsonian [including the national zoo] the monuments, free outdoor concerts, tours of the capital, the bell tower at the Old Post Office Pavillion, National Archives and on and on...I especially recommend the FREE planatarium show at the Air and Space.
Make it even more "wallet-friendly" by staying in a hotel outside the city [silver spring is a good bet] As an added bonus-for a young child- the "adventure" of transportation on the metro subway system is a cheap, efficient way to get around town...and pack your own picnic lunch to eat on the National Mall [but i recommend splurging on the freeze-dried "space" ice cream at the Air & Space Museum for dessert]

I've never been to Pine Creek Gorge in Northern PA (Wellsboro), but it looks amazing! I think a 3-year old would love all the rivers and falls and wildlife.
