Hike and ice cream

P1010186.jpgSunday afternoon, some friends and I hiked to an observation tower near the resort town of Mount Gretna and climbed the narrow rusty ladders to the top, where you can supposedly see parts of four counties on a clear day.P1010195.jpgIt's not super well-known -- the Park at Governor Dick isn't a state or county park and I heard of it for the first time when friends mentioned it. We had a bit of difficulty figuring out which roads would take us to the trail head, and the trail itself wasn't well-marked, but we figured it out.

It was a nice excursion, but we were a little frustrated at the lack of on-site information about the tower and the park. We like to learn a little when we're visiting new places.P1010192.jpg

Now, for the ice-cream...

When we went back into the town, we found a small information booth with some history of the town and the Jigger Shop, which is famous for its ice cream.

Having worked up an appetite, we had lunch at said Jigger Shop and ice-cream for dessert.

I was pleased with my Mediterannean turkey wrap -- even though we later realized they had made it with grilled chicken! -- and if you order root beer or birch beer, you get free refills in the frosted mug!

We were a little disappointed that the $3.30 for a double-dip cone got us two tiny kid-sized scoops that only left us wanting more. But some of the sundaes and other concoctions on the menu looked absolutely amazing (if not pricey at close to $7 for some).

Still, I guess enough people are willing to pay that because the lines (yes, lines, plural) at the ice-cream counter stretched back into the seating area the entire time we were there.

Have you been to the observation tower? The Jigger Shop? What did you think?
