Kindle the new carry-on?

kindle.jpegThe Kindle 2 has clearly gained more converts than the first version of Amazon's electronic book reader. For travelers worried about space and weight of their luggage and carry-ons, it can be a lifesaver.

But there are still reasons to opt for an old-fashioned book made from pages. Here's one take on it. And then another by YDR copy editor Teresa Cook's husband, who recently splurged on one to enjoy during his frequent travels.

Have you gone electronic with your library? What is your take on Kindle as the next must-have travel companion?

My Kindle 2 came today. I am so excited. So far I have only had a chance to read the user guide and get a little familiar. I find it very easy and intuitive to use.

I am a BIG reader. My husband said if it means no more piles of books, GET IT. It is expensive and I debated long about it, but I used birthday money and gift certificates, and told myself I was stimulating the economy. :)

I love the built in dictionary and the ability to make marginal notes and create bookmarks. It is very easy on the eyes, just like reading print. If it was like reading a computer screen I would not have bought it. You can change the text size to 6 or so different settings, very easy to do.

I still don't know what book I will download first. I understand there are free books available, so I'll certainly download some of them. Maybe I'll pay for the latest John Grisham, I hear he mentions York PA in it.
