Maine: Lighthouses, Lobster and Acadia

Oh my goodness! So much time has passed since my last post…and so much has happened. I am now officially a Mrs., to which my grandfather remarked, “It’s about time.” With wedding jitters behind us, we embarked on a beautiful honeymoon in Maine. We did all the Maine things you have to do while you’re in the state…tried a lobster roll, dipped our toes in the chilly Atlantic ocean, perused the cute shops in Kennebunkport and explored the wilds of Acadia National Park.

Here are a few of the natural highlights from our journey up north. We only spent a week there and we saw as much as we could see in that short amount of time. Still, I want to go back so very much. There was so much to see and do up there; I know we only touched on a little bit of it.

Without further adieu…

On the way up to Bar Harbor, we took a side trip to see Pemaquid Lighthouse. This is a quintessential lighthouse found in calendars and postcards. We had to see it for ourselves.

The Desert of Maine

With an impending wedding, I get asked a lot of questions… Most often people ask me if I’m getting nervous yet. To which I want to say, “Not yet, but keep asking and I might start feeling that way.”

Another question, one I don’t mind because of my sheer excitement, is “Where are you going for your honeymoon?” The answer is Maine, if you want to know. In all my conversations about how great the state of Maine is, I am almost always told about the state’s desert. That’s right, did you know Maine has its very own desert?

Exploring Seneca Lake!

I had a glorious time last weekend. I was surrounded by beautiful lake views, hills of grape vines, over 30 wineries and lots of sunshine. Where was I, you ask? I spent part of my Memorial Day weekend traipsing around the wineries of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail in Upstate New York. This trip came about for two reasons–with the wedding just a little over a week away, I needed to get my case and a half of white wine to serve at the reception.

The wine I really, really wanted to serve was Diamond White from Torrey Ridge Winery, an award-winning winery situated on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Also, I thought it would be nice to spend some quality time with my mom before the big day.

So this is what happened… My mom and her friend Barb are Seneca Lake Wine Trail experts so they decided to take me on a second Bachelorette party weekend of sorts. They mapped the trip, booked the hotel and packed the cooler with lots of sandwiches, fruit, cheese and crackers so all those little wine samples wouldn’t get the better of us. They picked me up bright and early Saturday morning and we were off!

Foundry Day in Boiling Springs!

Local travel idea alert! Nestled in neighboring Cumberland County is the quaint mountain hamlet of Boiling Springs. It’s a cute, little town with its picturesque Children’s Lake, old homes and little shops.

If you know me, you know I love a good arts & craft festival. And by arts & crafts I don’t mean crocheted dish clothes and sweatshirts with puffy paint. Those types of things all have their own place in the craft world but not here. The Foundry Day Arts & Crafts Festival looks like it should be the real deal…fine art, pottery, jewelry, woodworking and more.

Kayaks, Pine Grove Furnace and Hoagies

Over the weekend, Zach and I took the kayaks out for the first time this season. It was glorious! Sunny and warm. Typically we paddle around Pinchot but last weekend we craved a change of scenery.

As a little girl, I spent Saturdays fishing with my dad at Laurel Lake in Pine Grove Furnace and stopping by Green Mountain General Merchandise for chocolate milk and a chocolate pie. So healthy, I know! The little country store is still my dad’s favorite bait shop when he goes fishing in that neck of the woods.

It’s National Park Week!

Perhaps in an attempt to get some sunlight, Zach and I spent Sunday afternoon wandering around the Gettysburg Battlefield. Unbeknownst to me, I learned that this week just so happens to be National Park Week and we were walking around one of America’s 394 national parks.

What is National Park Week? It runs from April 16th to 24th. During this time, all national parks are free of entrance fees. The purpose of the week is to highlight the connection between human and environmental health and the vital role America’s national parks play in both.

In our immediate area, you have two options: the Gettysburg National Military Park and the adjacent Eisenhower National Historic Site. I love the new visitors center in Gettysburg. It’s a great place to pick up a battlefield map before you start exploring. You can also peruse the museum bookstore, the interactive exhibits, the restored Gettysburg Cyclorama and the Refreshment Saloon. The bathrooms aren’t bad either :-)

It’s the Final Count Down!

Hey gang! First things first, it’s about time I give a shout out to one of our other blogs, specifically that of Bil Bowden of Bil’s Eye View. Check out his post on the Plumpton Park Zoo in Rising Sun, Maryland and learn about some family-friendly local travel ideas!

As anyone who’s ever planned a wedding will tell you, at some point you hit a wall with all the planning. You just want to get the whole thing over with and move on to the much deserved vacation. Whenever I think wistfully of eloping, I take a deep breath and dream of this…

That would be coastal Maine. Oh yes, and I think of L.L. Bean headquarters and all the fun things I might buy there. Love it! So whenever that certain co-worker (you know who you are) spins around in her chair every morning to announce the number of days left til the wedding or when my mom reminds me again and again that everything pertaining to the wedding is “non-refundable,” I think of sites like the one above. That and lobster rolls and a new L.L. Bean fleece and…

A Subject of Utmost Ickiness

I knew when I started working on Explorer’s Backpack that there would come a time when I would post about (gulp) bedbugs. Nothing creeps me out more than creepy crawlies, especially ones that like to come home with you. Ick!

I’m looking forward to this weekend. We have friends who are moving to Colorado in the next few weeks (that’s a sad thing) and this weekend we’re traveling to Philly for their going away party. It should be a late night and a good time with a lot of friends we don’t get to see too often.

We booked a hotel room for the night. That’s the part that makes me get a little panicky. I know I annoy Zach to no end when we check into a hotel room. First, I pull back the bed sheets and examine the seams of the mattress. Usually I check out the front and back of the headboard with a flashlight. Then and only then can I really feel calm about it. But those gross little bugs are still in the back of my mind… especially mid-way through the trip, when Zach’s suitcase looks like it exploded and his clothing is scattered all over the room. I envision bedbugs sauntering up to his jeans draped across the hotel room chair and making a home. Yes, you could say I’m a little neurotic about it.

A few months ago, I came across this travel story from the Associated Press and saved it. Read on if you dare for some tips on how to avoid bedbugs in a hotel.

Explore York

I’m the assistant news editor at the York Daily Record/Sunday News. My new job brought me to York after having lived many years in southeastern Virginia.
As a newcomer to the region, I’ve been interested in visiting the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in downtown York. The following event provides the perfect introduction, especially for folks like me who work weird (i.e. nights and weekends) hours:
The York Symphony Orchestra presents a free “Live at Lunch” performance featuring violinist Rachel Lee from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, April 15, in the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center lobby, 50 N. George St., York.
Lee will offer a sneak peek of her concert with the York Symphony Orchestra, “Taste of Tchaikovsky.”
Culinary Creations will offer $5 box lunches, which include a beverage, while supplies last.

Spring is around the corner (I promise!)

I woke up this morning to see snow coating the ground and tree branches. It appeared as if Mother Nature was playing an April Fools joke on us.

We may have been in the last grips of winter this morning but trust me, warmer weather is not far away. So I thought I’d give you a little taste of spring in today’s blog about Longwood Gardens in Kennett Squaure, Penn.

I could spend a whole day (and then some) exploring Longwood Gardens. What with the Conservatory, 325 acres of outdoor gardens, the several fountains and the Pierce duPont house, all on the premises, there’s tons to explore. Even if you aren’t into the whole flower thing, Longwood Gardens can be really interesting, if only for it’s unadulterated beauty.
