Life is good in these parts

| | Comments (1)

lifegood.jpgI was in Lancaster County today doing reporting for an upcoming story about tourism in the area. As I rounded a curve near the town of Intercourse, I came upon this message.

I'm thinking the writer isn't so much making a statement about life in Amish country as he or she is referring to the recent success of Philadelphia sports teams.

Still, the thought is nice...

My kind of sign

sarcasm.jpgI spotted this sign on the desk of our Sunday editor, Scott Blanchard. It was given to him by niche publications editor Kara Eberle, who spotted it during a family trip to Cape May this summer and couldn't resist buying it.

In case you can't read the tiny words in the logo, the motto is "E Pluribus Smart Assimus."

What cool signs have you spotted lately? Snap a picture and send it to me!

Not everyone thinks life is good

P1010089.jpgI spotted these "Life is Crap" T-shirts in Ocean City, N.J. when I was there for a day last week to celebrate my (gulp!) 31st birthday.

Apparently, there's a bit of backlash by folks who are fed up with the popular motto's cheery attitude. You knew it would happen sooner or later!

Where I live

normal.jpg Normalville! Ha!

Makes me want to knock on the doors and interview the residents, maybe hang around town for a few days to see what normal looks like, you know?

And then there's the whole philosophical discussion of what is normal, anyway?

Seriously, if you need to check it out for yourself, it's in southwestern PA, not too far from Ohiopyle State Park. Let me know what life's like in Normalville! :)

Huh?

trainsign.jpg This sign above the restrooms in the Ohiopyle visitor's center (a former train station -- see photo below) had me totally perplexed.

As I waited my turn in line, I thought about it probably a little too much. How would flushing the toilets in the station restrooms be affected by whether the train was there or not:? Afraid that I wouldn't enjoy the rest of my afternoon without knowing the answer, I had to ask.

The answer wasn't pretty.

Don't want to live on this street

P1000898.jpgSpotted in the town of Ohiopyle this weekend. Strangely enough, it wasn't anywhere near a fire department or ambulance association or other emergency service provider location that I could tell. It seemed to be a residential alley.

Standing on the corner

Deb Forry snapped this photo of her husband, Art, and grandson, Brendan Minton of Tempe, Ariz., "standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona," just like the line in the Eagles hit "Take it Easy" during a March trip.

They were returning to Tempe from a petrified forest and meteor crater.

Their travel tip: If driving here from Phoenix, you might want to consider booking a hotel/motel because it's a 5-hour drive and you'll want plenty of time to enjoy the desert.

Jonron-resized.jpgI was in Philadelphia Thursday evening for the city's Fiesta on the Parkway, featuring one of my favorite (albeit old) salsa groups, DLG (Dark Latin Groove), when I saw this banner.

After a few minutes trying to figure out what "jonron" meant, then wondering why I didn't know this word, it dawned on me....

Double entendres

wall.jpg Headline writers have a hard job. They have to convey lots of meaning in limited space, make it accurate, clever and maybe even fun.

When it works, it's magic.

When it doesn't... well, either Jay Leno makes fun of their work on a segment of The Tonight Show, or they get put on a tile like these in the bathrooms of the new Newseum in Washington, D.C.

I felt bad for the folks behind these blunders, but still, I couldn't help but find some of them entertaining. Does that make me a bad journalist? (please say no)

Gotta love it

My friend and her husband spotted this sign in Guanajuato, Mexico, during a trip there in May. When she showed it to me earlier this evening, I knew I just had to share it here on the blog.

Great. There's no other way to describe it. Thanks Pau!
