After getting soaked at the York Fair Saturday morning on my way into Memorial Hall's Culinary Corner, I was expecting the worst for that night's Gavin DeGraw show on the Toyota Grandstand. The fair was a ghost town for most of the day, but later, gusty winds cleared away the clouds and it looked my luck was about to change.
Before the show, I was out looking for DeGraw fans to chat with. I found them in the form of teenage and 20-something females sporting colorful galoshes and bright eyes, full of hope that they'd be whisked backstage to meet the man of the hour. They gushed about how DeGraw was a real musician because he writes his own songs and plays instruments. In short, they reminded me of myself at a 2003 Coldplay concert.
I must admit that I was also wearing colorful galoshes, but only out of necessity. I'd already ruined a pair of sneakers at the fair earlier when I walked through a mud puddle. When I went backstage to talk with DeGraw before the concert, he actually told me he wanted to wear them. (The man obviously has good taste in shoes.)
We chatted for about a half hour about everything from sky diving to rainbows to NASCAR. I was surprised at how candidly he spoke. Maybe it was a caffeine rush from the coffee he was sipping or maybe, just maybe, the words of his song are true and he didn't want to be anything other than himself. The jury is still out.
