Carlisle Area School District caught some heat at its last board meeting for a decision to bar teachers from taking part in the student-initiated See You at the Pole prayer event last month.
School board members heard from critics, including an attorney with the Virginia-based Center for Law and Religious Freedom, asking the district to reconsider the decision next year, the Carlisle Sentinel reports.
The adviser to the high school's Crossroads Christian Club worried other recent decisions, too, noting that some of her group's announcements were not permitted to run on the school's TV station because they were deemed "religious." Also, a teacher prayer chain was disbanded.
According to the Sentinel, District Solicitor Jim Flower told the meeting audience the decision was based on a court ruling involving a New Jersey football coach who prayed with his students. Student complaints had led Borden's district to bar teachers from praying with students, and the Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals sided with the school district in the spring.
