Word of the day: Nimrod

| | Comments (0)

Today's word, Nimrod, is described in Genesis as the "first on earth to be a mighty man" and as "a mighty hunger before the lord."

Nimrod

noun

1. A descendant of Ham represented in Genesis as a mighty hunter and a king of Shinar

2. (not capitalized) a hunter

According to my Page A Day Calendar ... nimrod has also been used in English as a noun meaning "tyrant" (Nimrod was not known as a benevolent king, apparently).

Nimrod has also been associated with the attempt to build the Tower of Babel, which proved a disastrous idea. Thus, many of us use nimrod for its other meaning -- "a stupid person."
