Word of the day: Jehu

| | Comments (0)

Today's word is inspired by the cab driver I had in Baltimore recently. He missed his calling to drive a firetruck.

jehu

noun

A driver especially of a cab or coach; specifically: one who drives fast or recklessly

According to my Page A Day Calendar:

The original Jehu was a commander of chariots for Ahab, king of Israel. He later led a revolt against the king and took the throne himself.

The Bible notes Jehu "drives furiously" (II Kings 9:20). In the 17th century, English-speakers began using jehu as a generic term meaning "coachman" or, more specifically, "a fast or reckless coachman."
