Update: A fun holiday craft for your plastic bottle caps.
The claim that plastic bottle caps can be reclaimed to help uninsured cancer patients receive chemotherapy treatments is unfounded.
In recent months, I’ve heard from several congregations collecting caps for this purpose, but the fundraiser is apparently a hoax, according to the American Cancer Society. It researched the claim extensively and found the rumor to be “similar to other ‘cash for trash’ hoaxes” that have circulated for years.
Plastic bottle caps have little monetary value and often aren’t accepted by municipal recycling programs because of the difficulty in recycling them.
Another version of the story in circulation says the caps will be made into prosthetic limbs for disabled service members.
At least one company, Aveda, has a bottle-cap recycling program. Aveda accepts polypropylene (plastic #5) lids, which are repurposed for new packaging, (call 877-Aveda09 for details). No. 5 plastics are also accepted for recycling at certain Whole Foods stores.
Note: Many Ronald McDonald House chapters collect soda can tabs as fundraisers. This is a separate and ongoing recycling effort for the charity.
Also, Turkey Hill Minit Markets runs a fundraiser for schools and other groups called Moo Money, which collects milk carton caps.
