The movie "Out in the Silence," which screens at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in York at 7 tonight, tells the story of what happened when filmmaker Joe Wilson announced his same-sex marriage in two Venango County, Pa., newspapers.

Wilson (at left) is expected at the screening tonight. He has said his mission is to expand public awareness about the difficulties that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people face in rural and small-town America.

Update: Looks like the Darwin biopic "Creation" will be screened in the U.S. after all. Distributor Newmarket Films picked up the movie. Newmarket also handled the release Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ."

The film should hit theaters around Christmastime. Hollywood Reporter has more details.

A peek at the Christian film industry

What was the biggest grossing independent film in 2008? If you guessed "Slumdog Millionaire," you're wrong.

It's a Christian film that's been playing at several local churches recently -- "Fireproof," starring Kirk Cameron. According to this NPR story, it was all the talk of some 2,000 Christian movie fans gathering at the San Antonio (Texas) Independent Christian Film Festival in January.

Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly are slated to star as Charles and Emma Darwin in upcoming biopic, rechristened "Creation," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The real-life husband-and-wife duo are scheduled to begin shooting at the end the month in England. The director is Jon Amiel, of TV's "The Tudors" and 1999's "Entrapment."

According to the Reporter: "Amiel's film portrays Darwin as a man torn between his love for his deeply religious wife and his own growing belief in a world where God has no place. The scientist finds himself caught in a struggle between faith and reason, love and truth."

In case you missed them, two other films about the clash between faith and science came out this year: "Expelled" and the upcoming "Religulous," in theaters Oct. 3.

York County, you might recall, is home to Dover Area School District -- party to 2005's infamous intelligent design trial "Of Pandas and People" fame.
