Plank Road bridge over Interstate 83 in Shrewsbury Township could reopen to traffic next month

Last week, a reader asked me what the status is with the Plank Road bridge over Interstate 83 in Shrewsbury Township.

It has been closed since January 2011 for a replacement, and work was delayed early last year because the contractor was waiting for the utility companies to move their facilities before starting to demolish the span.

At this time, it will likely be late August until the bridge reopens to traffic, said Greg Penny, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

The concrete for the bridge deck was to be poured last month, and it usually takes a month before the deck cures sufficiently to build the parapet on top of it, he said.

Crews also need to pave the roadway approaches, install guiderail and paint the traffic lines, Penny said.

    Incredible!

This was supposed to be nine month project….now stretched out for nearly a year beyond the original completion date.

Which utility was the cause of this hold up?

Let’s hope that Shrewsbury Township and PennDOT remember this the next time that utility needs a right-of-way or similar favors.
