A bear apparently has been hanging around in Delta.
Someone tweeted Thursday that it was seen on Chestnut Street. So I took a trip to the southeastern part of the county to see what was going on.
I knocked on doors on Chestnut Street; I dropped by the post office; I stopped at two grocery stores and a car repair shop.
People said they knew of a bear being seen around town some time ago. A picture of it on someone’s porch had been published in the local weekly paper.
Maddie Leonard, who works at a grocery store in town, said she saw the bear a couple of months ago.
“It was right in our backyard,” she said.
It seemed to be scared of her neighbors’ goats.
“It’s really gentle,” Leonard said, but added, “I wouldn’t go up to it.”
When asked how big it was, she described it as “a baby.”
But no one I talked with Thursday seemed to know who might have seen the bear on Chestnut Street recently. Some residents looked wide-eyed when I asked about a bear. One man, who is a hunter, said he would have gotten a call if the bear was seen again in town. He said I might as well go home.
And a state police dispatcher said she wasn’t aware of a call about a bear sighting in Delta.
Finally, after spending a couple of hours around town, I had to head to the office to do some other work.
So if you see the bear in Delta again, would you let me know? I’m curious about it.
