A ramp to Interstate 83 North at North Hills Road will be closing again in a few weeks.

That’s because crews will be working to widen North Hills Road, said Mike Crochunis, a spokesman with the state Department of Transportation.

The ramp will close at 7 a.m. March 16, and it will be closed for about a week, Crochunis said. Drivers can use Route 30 to get to I-83 during the detour.

The ramp closed for about a week last summer for improvements.

The widening of North Hills Road is being done to help alleviate traffic congestion in the area. It has been one of the most congested roads in York County, according to the York County Planning Commission.

Transportation officials expect that drivers will use the Market Street exit of I-83 (Exit 19) as an alternative to avoid the construction zone for the makeover of the Mount Rose interchange, which starts this spring. The Mount Rose interchange is Exit 18.

As part of the widening of North Hills Road, crews will be creating two straight through lanes from the Market Street exit ramp to Industrial Highway.

J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen, Pa. is doing the work for the $2.5 million improvement project. It is expected to be finished in September.
