Macworld = Christmas

Dec. 25 was nice to me this year, but it wasn't anything compared to Jan. 9. Tuesday was the day that Steve Jobs (i.e. Santa Claus) took the stage for his annual keynote speech at Macworld (i.e. the North Pole) and introduced the world to the iPhone (i.e. one of the coolest consumer electronics ever).

The rumors circulating this device had been ongoing for a couple years and, in true Apple fashion, almost all the "leaked" details were wrong - in the best kind of way. Leading up to its introduction, there were rumors of Apple releasing a widescreen iPod, a tablet version of the Mac and a phone of some sort. Turns out, all those were true - except they were really all one device all along.

Sure, most of the features built into the phone have appeared in some form or another in other portable electronics before, but no company had ever streamlined them so well into one ridiculously slick-looking device. User-friendly doesn't even begin to describe this sucker.

Is it flawless? Nah, no device is. But it certainly seems to have the fewest flaws of any competing device. It's lacking a 3G network connection, a standard for most modern cell phones. It's camera lacks a flash. Even though it has both Wifi and Bluetooth built-in, you still have to sync your computer data with a cable. But aside from some of those trivialities, I am mega-impressed. And from the looks of Apple's stock yesterday, I'd say most of the world was too. I made a few hundred bucks just because I like Apple - not too shabby.

Now, it's just a waiting game until June, when the thing finally comes out. Sigh. I'll be waiting, iPhone.
