I'm trying to be a supportive girlfriend.
So for the second year I'm getting roaped into NASCAR.
Today starts the season with the Daytona 500, which apparantly is a big deal, because the TV announcers keep saying so.
I learned a big lesson last year, when my dismal knowledge of NASCAR was fodder for a lot of snide commentary from my boyfriend's dad and brother-in-law.
The only driver I knew by name was Jeff Gordon. Frankly, I figured that information was sufficient for a lifetime of conversations about the sport. Well it wasn't, especially for weekends spent with my boyfriend's family.
Based on my love for chocolate, I decided I should root for the M&M's car, No. 38. Who can't get behind M&Ms? They're delicious. When we went to Dover for a race last year, I even bought a pink M&Ms hat, a steal at $5 (the driver switched teams or some nonsense like that).
This year, I'm vaguely excited about the Daytona 500, mostly because it's what's on TV right now and I have no choice. But also because we get a double dose of chocolate leading off the race. That's right, my M&Ms guy (whoever that is) got the pole position and (bonus) the Snicker's dude is right behind him. Yay NASCAR!
And the race promo music is cool. Kelly Clarkson sang to kick off the race. They also played songs by the Decemberists and Weezer, and Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" -- you know, the one that starts off, "to the left, to the left" (har de har har).
Sigh.
It's going to be a long 10 months.
