Gotta give those teens credit...

As entertainment reporter, I talk to local bands. A lot. A whole lot. It's a blessing and a curse. The truth is, there is something supernatural about York County because I think there are more bands than there are people. You think I'm kidding but they're everywhere. I open my shower curtain at night and there's a new local band holding out my towel for me. It's kind of getting creepy.

When it comes to self-promotion some bands are better than others. Some contact me and when I try and get back to them, I never hear from them again. Some check in with frequent e-mails to make sure I haven't forgotten that I promised them a profile in FlipSide. I haven't.

The one interesting connection between the bands who are good at self-promotion and those who aren't seems to be the most simple one - age. The younger the average age of band's members, the more take-charge they are about their careers.

This could be for a few reasons. Teens and twentysomethings, possibly owning a slightly heightened sense of vanity than their elders, may crave the attention a bit more. Maybe they just have a higher energy level to go out and promote themselves. Maybe they know the communications channels of the Internet and e-mail a bit better and have found more ways to get themselves out there.

Whatever it is, I want to take a moment to give a lot of the high school and college-aged bands credit for what they do. They may still live at home, they may still take the bus to school, but they sure as hell know how to work in a band or group.

With that being said, check out the show in the flier above, which I was contacted about or saw advertised about 42 times in the last week or so.
