If you're a film lover, York County can be rough.
We're always sure to get the blockbusters, but those smaller, intimate and — in my opinion — flat-out better films don't make it onto a big screen here very often.*
Allow me to offer a solution:
The beautiful Charles Theatre in Baltimore, about an hour's drive from the heart of York.
The list of films currently showing prove why this theater is such a gem:
— "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"
Everything about the Charles makes it worth the drive. In addition to showing the latest and greatest of indie flicks, it boasts a lot of charm, reasonably priced tickets and tasty concessions. Plus, there's a cute (though pricey) restaurant/bar called Tapas Teatro next door that you can access from the lobby.
Among the films I've enjoyed here: "The Squid and the Whale," "Brokeback Mountain," "Notes on a Scandal" and "Pan's Labyrinth."
For complete details, including showtimes, films coming soon and directions, visit www.thecharles.com.
* An exception to this are the films shown at the Capitol Theatre in downtown York, however they are usually screened several months after they were released and, in many cases, are already available to buy or rent on DVD. Still, if you aren't up for the drive down to Baltimore and/or prefer to see the films on the big screen instead of renting them, this is a great option.
