Global warming is on the tip of most people's tongues in this day and age. And pollution (air, noise, etc.) is not far behind.
Most people I know are doing their best to conserve and recycle, but it isn't those people we need to worry about. It's the people who couldn't care less ...
While I was running the Rail Trail the other day, two young girls were walking along the sidewalk on Princess Street. As they came to the grass at the trail in front of me, the one girl chucks her soda can on the ground followed by a candy wrapper.
Not only is she spoiling her dinner, she's blatantly littering. Now, I'm not the biggest environmentalist on this planet, but, sheesh, there was a trash can maybe 10 feet away from her.
I threw the evil eye her way, which prompted Miss Plump to oh-so-politely ask me what my problem was. I just shook my head in disappointment and sadness and kept running.
The problem is how do we reach the people who don't care? How do we convince them that, contrary to their beliefs, squirrels and birds don't really like cans and chocolate wrappers?

When this young lady asked you what was wrong you should have told her. That she was an inconsiderate slob and that her socially unacceptable behavior was contributing negatively to the beautiful surroundings. Her arrogance alone when she asked" What was your problem?" would have been enough for me to politely smack Ms. Lard Butt between the eyes.
