Three cheers for XPN

For all you York Countians not blessed with satellite who are left flipping through your car’s radio dial desperately searching for something — anything — beyond country, Top 40 and hard rock, your prayers have been answered.

The University of Pennsylvania’s WXPN (88.7) is now being broadcast in Central Pennsylvania.

Praise the lord!

To mark their arrival in the region, the station sponsored several events over the past few days, including folk rock band Sea Wolf at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center 11:30 Sunday morning (strange time eh?) and indie rockers Matt Pond PA and singer songwriter Jesca Hoop at the Chameleon Club in Lancaster Saturday night.

I missed the Sunday morning performance as I was recovering from Saturday night’s show.

If Saturday’s performance is any indication of what’s in store for radioland (and I’m pretty sure it is, because I’ve caught snippets of XPN when I’ve been driving near Harrisburg), we’re in great luck.

Jesca Hoop brought such a unique, other-worldy sound to the stage. Her voice a strange hybrid of Regina Spektor and the chick from CocoRosie, so cool, and fun, and fresh, and just ... different.

It was easy to get behind Matt Pond PA (yep that’s PA ans in Pennsylvania), too. They played instantly contagious rock that will have you tapping your feet and shaking your head.
