If I lived in the parallel universe depicted in the upcoming film "The Golden Compass," my daemon would be a jackal.
Apparently, that means I'm modest, sociable, inquisitive, flexible and assertive, according to the results of a 20-question test I took here. That's pretty accurate. So, what is a daemon?
"The Golden Compass" is based on the first novel in Philip Pullman's trilogy "His Dark Materials," which describes the world of 11-year-old Lyra Belacqua. There, a person's soul lives on the outside of his or her body in the form of a daemon -- an animal spirit that accompanies them through life.
The bond between human and daemon is very powerful and the two are rarely separated, according to the Web site. In the movie, the daemons exhibit knowledge of what their humans are thinking and share similar mannerisms and an unspoken conversations with one another.
A person with a dog daemon would tend to follow authority. One with a cat daemon would tend to be independent.
Lyra's daemon is Pantalaimon, which (because she's a child) can take on many forms, such as an ermine, a wild cat, a moth, a lion and even a dragon.
The "Meet Your Daemon" test at the movie Web site asks questions to help determine your character. Then, your daemon avatar will be revealed.
I don't know much about jackals except they look like small coyotes, scavenge for food and mate for life. Being a cat person myself, I have to say I was surprised my daemon belongs to the same mammalian family as dogs. However, my daemon and I are both long-distance runners.
The movie comes out Dec. 7 and stars Nicole Kidman, Dakota Blue Richards, Daniel Craig and Eva Green.
