Avoid Salmonella with homegrown

If the grocery store prices on produce aren't enough to drive you to farmer's markets and roadside stands, maybe the FDA's warning about Salmonella will.

Burger King, Wawa, Chili's, McDonald's and White Rose Bar & Grill are just a few places I've seen take tomatoes off the menu.

I don't miss them. Fast food and most restaurant serve shipped tomatoes that taste like plastic. Most homegrown tomatoes around here won't be in abundance until July, but I've seen a few at New Eastern Market in Springettsbury Township. I shopped at Twin Pine Farms Country Store this morning for squash, zucchini, tomatoes, carrots and a red pepper. Even though some of it wasn't locally grown, the prices were much less expensive than at the grocery stores I frequent.

I've learned that you really have to be careful with the cost of food. You can get lovely fresh foods at the farmer's markets for half the price. It's worth a shot. If you have time to take a stroll through the countrysides of York County, stop at a roadside stand. There are lots looking to sell their veggies to you.
