For a few years now, my family and I have been celebrating special occasions at The Works in Wyomissing, just outside of Reading. According to Google Maps, it's about an hour drive from York or 53 miles.
I describe it as a Chuck E. Cheese for adults or similar to Dave & Buster's if you've ever been to one of those.
I would love to have a play place for adults like this in York. The Works is in an old factory. Don't we have lots of those in York?
But we don't, so we drove to Reading to celebrate my aunt's 40th birthday party with games and grub.
We always start with dinner. The prices are comparable to a chain sports bar. My mom and I split bruschetta for an appetizer. I ate a salad and a yummy chicken sandwich on ciabatta bread. Our waiter, Jason, was very personal and attentive.
We got my aunt the Black and Tan brownie tower for dessert which consists of alternating layers of blondie brownie, chocolate ice cream, fudge brownie and vanilla ice cream topped with all kinds of goodies. We also tried a variety of drinks such as the orange creamsicle and the floating purple margarita.
After dinner, we met up in the game area. My sister and I loaded our plastic game card with $25. We spent hours playing Skee ball going back and forth with the high score. By the end of the night, I came out on top with an impressive 390! By using a precise geometric formula, I was finally able to hit the 100.
We also hit up Deal or No Deal, Dance Dance Revolution, basketball, poker and Ms. Pac-Man. We racked up more than 1,000 tickets and still had 75 credits left on the card...good for 30-plus games of Skee-Ball for our next visit. The ticket count is also stored on my card for next time, so we didn't have to settle for a silly Chinese finger trap as our prize.
Most of our party ended up in the loft for the bar and DJ. By 11 p.m., it was filled with good looking people dressed to impress. The place has it all. Family fun and partying.
Wouldn't a place like that be just ideal in York?
What do you say?
