. . . then you need to see this one. My favorite Frenchman has wowed me yet again. I finally rented Michel Gondry's "Be Kind Rewind," starring Jack Black, Mos Def and Danny Glover.
Mike (Mos Def) is left in charge of Mr. Fletcher's (Glover) struggling video store while he's away. After a freak accident, Jerry (Black), Mike's looney friend, becomes magnetized. Jerry walks into the store and erases every video tape. Upon this discovery, Mike panics and decides to remake, or "Swede," the movies. Surprisingly, the remakes are a hit with the New Jersey townsfolk. "Ghostbusters," "Rush Hour," "The Lion King" and "Driving Miss Daisy" are among some of the hilarious homemade versions.
Gondry has proved his creativity is limitless, with films such as "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "The Science of Sleep." "Be Kind" lived up to my expectations of the director/writer . . . funny, smart and loaded with imagination.
