Weekend roundup

Gavin DeGraw's hoop dreams:
I continued the trend of starting the weekend out on Thursday night to help my friend celebrate her birthday. We hit up the Harp & Fiddle for dinner and drinks. Besides making a hand-crafted super hero cape and tap dancing, I tried to catch some of John McCain's speech. I got distracted from reading the captions by local jam band Mad Banter.

After sitting on my butt and watching bad TV drowning my sorrows Friday night after learning that Danity Kane cancelled their York Fair show, I bounced back Saturday morning by heading to the fairgrounds.

There's nothing scarier than an abandoned carnival, so I would have been pretty freaked out if it hadn't have been for the hurricane. I was distracted by my broken umbrella and mud-soaked sneakers. I had to make a pit stop at Ross to buy galoshes and a new bumper shoot, which came in handy navigating the fair's parking lot river later.

Thankfully, the weather cleared in time for the Gavin DeGraw concert. I was able to meet the never hatless DeGraw. I felt kind of bad that I got to chat him up after talking with female fans who would have given their faux designer purses to meet the singer/songwriter. Despite the fact that he hadn't brushed his teeth yet, talked about NASCAR and tried to steal my pink plaid galoshes, he seemed like a nice enough guy.

After the concert, I headed to Nautilus Diner to grab some dessert. I felt like "Gossip Girl" because I totally spotted a few local celebrities, aka York Revolution players, dining nearby. I wanted to whip out my phone and text my friends. I decided that would have been way lame.

Instead of seeing this gem, my two friends and I headed to Camp Hill Sunday afternoon to see Woody Allen's latest film "Vicky Cristian Barcelona." It made me realize that I should spend more time splattering paint on canvases, drinking wine and listening to Spanish guitar in romantically rustic foreign villas. It also made me realize that actress Penelope Cruz is totally underrated. Even though she was only in a portion of the movie, her fiery performance stole the show from a beautifully boring Scarlett Johansson. It echoed her character in "Blow."

If you couldn't tell, I spent the rest of the night blogging about the 2008 MTV VMAs.
