Weekend roundup

Goodbye, blue eyes

This weekend was like riding a roller coaster -- there were a lot of ups and downs and it left me with a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Friday night, I ducked the Bike Night crowds and headed to the first CapLive show to see Hoots & Hellmouth. The band burst onto the stage with its foot stompin' blend of folk and blues. I kept using the word "hootenanny" to describe the experience since it contained "hoot." Did I ever mention how clever I can be after two $4 beers?

The band performed sans a drummer and relied on wooden boards and tambourines for percussion. The lead singer, Sean Hoots' powerful vocals rivaled those of any R&B diva. I was bummed to see that the crowd was a bit sparse. i was glad that those who did attend not only clapped, but got up and danced.

After the show, the crew walked down the block to Harp & Fiddle. Lancaster indie/pop quintet Kheris rocked the house and tried to get fans to vote for their favorite songs from the set. After confusing myself and subsequently the band's drummer, I gave up on the survey. Harrisburg trio The Thrives played next and I ended the night by talking kids, concerts and cigarettes with the lead singer before wandering home along a misty Market Street.

Saturday morning began with two bouts of bad news before breakfast. I found my longtime aquatic amigo Raphael belly up in my bathroom right before I read that one of my biggest movie star crushes, Paul Newman, had passed away. It was definitely tissue time.

I didn't venture out until the evening to watch the DVR-ed Presidential debate over pizza at my friend's place. It felt good to geek out for a bit and even more good news came when the Fightin' Phils clinched the NL East division. I then traded politics for Penn State Football. Watching the Nittany Lions dominate Illinois was therapeutic.

We Are

Near the end of the game, I headed to Granfalloons to catch an oddly electric Waitin' On A Train performance. I was quickly reminded that "Rocky Raccoon" is a great tune, PDAs are always awkward and interpretive dance is an under-appreciated form of expression.

I spent Sunday getting some much-needed R & R. The weekend ended on a sour note when the Eagles lost to the Bears. But, hey, two out of three ain't bad.

Now that the fish is gone, it's time to get a cat!

I realized at this moment that you cannot write a good blog nor would you know a good band if it hit you on the head. "oddly electric waitin on a train"?? i was there. They were not electric at that show. Maybe you were too drunk to realize what was going on.

actually Erin,
