Rats are not evil! But they are in "Willard". . .

. . . then you shouldn't see this movie! I happen to be a rat aficionado, much to the horror and disgust of my friends and family. I love anything that happens to be rat-related. So when I found out about the movie "Willard," I just had to see it. The movie I saw is a 2003 remake of the 1971 version of the film and stars Crispin Glover (who, by the way, is totally insane).
Glover plays Willard, a social outcast who spends his time caring for his ailing mother. At work, Willard is terrorized and humiliated by his heinous boss. Willard soon discovers hoards of rats in the basement of his old home, and, quickly realizing how intelligent they are, begins to train them . . . to do evil. He befriends a gentle, diplomatic white rat and names him Socrates.
Needless to say, Willard trains the rats to get back at his boss. Evil ensues!
I have to say, the scenes between Socrates and Willard are moving, even if I am a bit biased. I mean, rats are awesome! But I had to shield my two pet rats' beady little eyes a few times. Rats are killed in several scenes and it was just too much to bear for a rat lover like myself.
There was, however, a DVD extra on rat people (people who show their rats and rat fanatics). The nearly 20-minute documentary was way better than the movie. One woman shows off one of her trained rats. The little guy "rescues" a doll from a "burning" dollhouse and carries the doll into a toy firetruck.
Yeah, so, they eat garbage, cause irreparable damage and spread pestilence, or whatever. But remember, they are super smart creatures! And cute ones, I might add.

I saw this film a while back and seeing as I'm not a huge fan of rats it really did make me cringe but I did find it interesting. This is not a film for people who hate rats, that's for sure.
