I've got Phillies phever.

Friday I had houseguests and wanted to show them a good time. I decided to take them to Cobblestones, since they're sports enthusiasts. The Flyers game was on, but we were having too much fun catching up to pay much attention. A couple friends joined us for supper and suds and, as always, the grilled cheese was amazing and affordable.

Later, we headed to a friend's apartment and ended up catching parts of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "The Beach." It was a strange combination of sweet movies.

Since my guests headed home and the weather was lousy Saturday, I hung out on my couch trying to tackle the pile of magazines and articles that accumulated. A friend came over Saturday night to catch the first quarter of the Penn State game before we headed to the Capitol Theatre to see Baltimore jam band The Bridge in concert. Luckily, my bud had just purchased a Blackberry, so we could keep up with various sports scores during the show.

It struck me then, how obsessive I've gotten about sports recently. But, then again, Penn State hasn't been ranked No. 3 in a while and the Phillies haven't been in the World Series since 1993. I guess my wacky behavior makes sense.

In spite of the Blackberry and a sparse crowd, The Bridge brought the noise. I saw them recently in Harrisburg and was looking forward to their funky tunes. The concert was filled with impromptu solos, well-placed covers and, of course, a bit of beat boxing. The audience was still able to create enough of a fuss for a one-song encore, though.

After my friend purchased a copy of the band's new album, we headed down the street to Harp & Fiddle, where we flashed our concert tickets for a free beer. Harp was packed with rowdy Penn State fans. As the Nittany Lions sealed their victory over Ohio State with a final field goal, someone started the "We are" chant.

After PSU, the rain-delayed Phillies game was on. I was surprised that no one else was yelling at the TV like me. The game went past 2 a.m. but watching the Phillies eek out a victory was worth it. It may have been one of the greatest sports nights of my life...so far.

Getting in the spirit of the season
Sunday, I took advantage of the beautiful day by taking a long run. In the afternoon, I ducked through the Halloween Parade crowds to meet a friend. It made me smile to see the little kids dressed up. I made me frown that people decided to block my car by parking in my apartment's private lot. Part of me wanted to see the parade, but an even bigger part of me wanted to see "The Nightmare Before Christmas" in digital 3-D in Hanover.

After grabbing dinner after the flick, we headed back as the sun was setting on the picturesque landscape and changing leaves. I arrived home with just enough time to prepare myself for the task of switching back and forth from the Phillies game to the "Mad Men" season finale.
